Exploring the Royal Crematorium: A Unique Attraction in Bikaner

Bikaner, known for its splendid havelis and the majestic Junagarh Fort, boasts many palaces and mansions associated with its royal heritage. Amidst these landmarks lies a lesser-known yet intriguing site - the royal crematorium, offering a glimpse into the regal traditions of the past. Located in Devikund Sagar village, about 15 to 20 kilometers from Bikaner city, this crematorium draws thousands of domestic and foreign tourists every year.
Ravi Shankar Purohit, affiliated with Mokshadham, sheds light on the historical significance of this site, stating that it has served as the final resting place for the kings of Bikaner for over 500 years. Managed by a trust administered by the royal family, the crematorium is adorned with ornate umbrellas, symbolizing the regal stature of the departed souls.
Devikund Sagar holds a special place in the annals of Bikaner's history as the designated cremation ground for the royal family. Following the demise of any member of the dynasty, their last rites are performed here, followed by the construction of a chhatri (cenotaph) in their honor. This age-old tradition continues to be observed, with approximately 300 to 400 chhatris gracing the premises.
According to Purohit, the umbrellas, crafted meticulously by artisans, were originally handcrafted using stones sourced from abroad. The tradition dates back to the reign of the fifth king of Bikaner, and since then, each monarch and royal family member has been accorded the same honor upon their demise. The chhatris, adorned with intricate Mughal-style designs, feature a blend of marble and red stones, with materials procured from distant lands to enhance their grandeur.
The royal crematorium stands as a testament to Bikaner's rich heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into its regal past and the enduring legacy of its illustrious rulers.
