The country is currently facing the second wave of the Corona epidemic. The daily figure of new cases has reached close to four lakhs. The cases active in the country are about to reach 3.5 million. The pressure on hospitals and the health system due to the increasing number of infected people is also clearly visible. In recent times, the country has also faced difficulties regarding the availability of oxygen.
Amidst all these challenges, another challenge is being raised, which needs to be cautious in time. The challenge is to ensure the availability of nurses and doctors to treat and care for corona infectives. Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, founder and noted heart surgeon of Narayana Health, drew attention to this challenge, a program of symbiosis. Dr. Shetty said, 'The country is facing a serious challenge. We have overcome many challenges before. When the epidemic started last year, we had no system of PPE kits. In a short time we were able to make Surplus PPE Kit.
From the number of ventilators to many other systems, today our situation is better than before. Dr. Shetty said that in view of the increasing number of infected people, a large number of ICU beds and ventilators are needed in the country. Success in this direction can be achieved on the basis of continuous efforts in the case of infra, but at the same time there will be a need to take proper care of the patients receiving treatment on these ICU beds and ventilators. Dr. Shetty said that as much as the role of a doctor in the treatment of a patient, the role of nurses is equally important. The larger the number of ICU beds, the greater the number of nurses required.
Studying students can become a solution
Dr. Shetty said that there are a large number of students in the country who are in the last year of their nursing studies and are preparing for the exam. These students may be given the opportunity to work directly. Such a system should be made in which these students are given degrees or certificates after playing a role in the treatment of corona throughout the year. It can also be proposed to prioritize them in government jobs. The problem of shortage of nurses can be easily dealt with by such steps.
The youth is in a dilemma
Dr. Shetty said that youth are a big force in the battle with Corona. The body of youth is relatively more capable of fighting corona infection. Also, the students who are to be nursed should be vaccinated, so that they can get a defense against the virus. Students studying in other streams of medicine should also be considered. He said that it is a war period. We can win this fight only on the strength of the youth.
