Amidst the havoc of the Corona epidemic, the new Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) drug has given new hope to win the war against Corona. This new anti-corona drug of DRDO will be used in emergency cases on corona-infected patients. The Drug Controller General of India has approved this drug developed under the name 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) of DRDO. This drug can significantly reduce the challenge of oxygen deficiency in corona-infected patients. DRDO has given this information.
Oxygen dependence also reduced in clinical trials
A large number of people taking the drug during the trial were found to be negative in the RTPCR test. This drug also significantly reduces oxygen dependence of hospitalized patients. The recovery of the patient from the 2DG drug has also been relatively quick. According to DRDO, this drug will prove to be extremely beneficial for patients suffering from corona infection. This drug can be given to moderate and severe patients of corona during hospital treatment.
DRDO and INMAS scientists developed medicine
DRDO and INMAS scientists started work on developing this drug in April 2020. Laboratory tests in collaboration with the Hyderabad-based Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology found that 2-DG is effective on the coronavirus SARS-COV-2. It is also able to stop the growth of the virus. Following this trial's conclusion, DCGI and Central Drugs Standard Control allowed its second phase of trial in May 2020. DRDO and Reddy's Laboratories subsequently conducted a clinical trial from May to October to assess the drug's effect.
Use of this drug helps patients in quick recovery
The drug has been found to be safe and effective on corona patients. Phase two trials were conducted first in six and then in 11 hospitals. In this order, its effect was tested on 110 patients. Assessments based on the trial found that patients using 2-DG medication recovered in a relatively short time span of two and a half days.
Its clinical trial in 27 hospitals in the country
After this success, DCGI allowed its third phase trial. From November to March 2021, clinical trials were conducted in 27 hospitals in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bengal, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra. It found that patients taking 2-DG drugs recovered faster than patients using Corona's prescribed standard medications and that their dependence on oxygen was also significantly reduced. The same trend was observed in patients older than 65 years. Subsequently, on May 1, DCGI gave permission for emergency use of this medicine.
Drug can be made easily in the country
The special thing is that 2-DG is a generic drug and it can be easily made in large quantities in the country. Given the condition of patients facing severe conditions due to lack of oxygen in the second wave of corona, this drug may prove to be very effective in preventing this condition in future.
How does DG work?
According to official information, clinical trials show that this drug accelerates the recovery rate in patients and reduces the dependence on oxygen. Most of the patients who were given 2-DG medicine, the RT-PCR test has come up negative early. The drug will be very helpful for patients suffering from coronavirus.
How to take 2-DG medicine
DRDO stated that this drug comes in the form of a powder, which can be dissolved in water. The clinical trial of this drug, developed in collaboration with Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Hyderabad at DRDO's Research Lab Institute of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (INMAS), has been successful. It accumulates in the virus-affected cells and stops the virus from growing by stopping the virus synthesis and energy production.
In how many days will 2-DG come?
DRDO has stated that it can be produced very easily, so it will soon be easily available across the country. Because it has very generic molecules and is similar to glucose.
