Himanta Biswa Sarma will be the next Chief Minister of Assam. On Sunday evening, he met Governor Jagdish Chandra Mukhi and presented his claim to form the government. He and his cabinet will be sworn in at 12 noon on Monday. Earlier, he was elected the leader of the BJP Legislative Party and then the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Legislative Party.
After being elected the leader, Sarma said - Sonowal will continue to be my guide
After being elected as the leader, Sarma termed his predecessor Sarbananda Sonowal's tenure as impeccable and corruption-free and said that he would continue to be his guide. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda for giving this opportunity.
Sarbananda Sonowal proposed Sarma's name
Ever since the NDA attained majority on May 2, suspense was prevailing over who would become the next Chief Minister of the state. Outgoing Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Sarma were both contenders for the post, but at the BJP Legislature Party meeting held on Sunday, 52-year-old Sarma was elected as the leader. His name was proposed by Sonowal himself and approved by BJP state president Ranjit Kumar Das and newly elected MLA Nandita Garlosa. Since no other name was proposed, Sarma was unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party.
Central observers Narendra Singh Tomar and Arun Singh were present in the meeting.
Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar and Party General Secretary Arun Singh were present at the meeting held following the Corona Protocol. Apart from them, the meeting was also attended by party general secretary (organization) BL Santosh and national vice-president Baijayant Jai Panda. The special thing is that Sarma and Sonowal arrived in the same vehicle for the meeting.
Sarma will be the 15th Chief Minister of Assam
The meeting was followed by a meeting of the NDA Legislative Party in which the BJP as well as its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People's Party Liberals (UPPL) MLAs. In this too, Sarma was unanimously elected as the leader. This paved the way for him to become the 15th Chief Minister of the state. Sonowal presented him with traditional gumosa and patted him on the back.
Sonowal submitted his resignation to Governor Mukhi
Earlier, Sarbananda Sonowal met Governor Mukhi and submitted his resignation and as per tradition, the Governor asked him to hold the post till the formation of the next government. Let us tell you that the present NDA government is the first non-Congress government in the state which has won the election for the second time in a row.
Opposition parties gave their best wishes
Opposition parties All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Congress have also extended best wishes to Sarma, who will become the Chief Minister of Assam. Both parties hoped that Assam would become one of the most developed states in the country during their tenure.
