Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sushil Chandra has said that the Election Commission is confident of conducting the assembly elections in five states, including Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, on time next year. The commission has got a lot of experience from the assembly elections in Bihar, Bengal, and four other states amid the corona virus epidemic.
Assembly elections in five states will be held on time: Election Commission
The term of the Goa, Manipur, Punjab and Uttarakhand assemblies will end in March 2022. At the same time, the term of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly will last till May next year. Chandra said in an interview, "It is the first responsibility of the Election Commission that before the end of the term of the Legislative Assembly, we conduct the elections and hand over the list of winning candidates (to the Governor)."
Will the commission be able to conduct elections on time in Corona's situation
He was questioned whether the commission would be able to conduct assembly elections in five states on time under the circumstances of Corona, while it postponed the by-elections to the Lok Sabha and the Assembly recently due to the second wave of epidemics. The by-elections for some seats in the Rajya Sabha and the biennial elections to the Legislative Council were also postponed due to the pandemic.
Sushil Chandra said- the Commission has a lot of experience of conducting elections during the epidemic
Chandra said, as you know, the second wave of corona is weakening and the number (of infection cases) is quite low. We held elections in Bihar during the pandemic. We have conducted elections in four states and one union territory. We have experience. We have gained a lot of experience in conducting elections even in the pandemic.

He said, I am confident that now with the epidemic weakening and hopes of its end soon, we will be in a position to conduct the assembly elections in five states next year on time as per the schedule. While there are BJP governments in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, there is a Congress government in Punjab.
