The famous mobile phone manufacturer Apple Inc. is in discussion these days about its plans to launch electric vehicles. According to the report, Apple Inc is in talks with China's CATL and BYD regarding the battery of its electric vehicles. However, the matter is still in the initial stage. People with knowledge of the matter said that it is not clear whether agreements will be made with CATL or BYD in this direction.
Meanwhile, some reports say that the companies that have come forward to supply the batteries of Apple's upcoming vehicles, the company have conditioned to have manufacturing facilities in the United States. The CATL involved in the talks, which supplies batteries to major carmakers including Tesla Inc., is unwilling to build a US factory with political tensions between Washington and Beijing.
At present, there is no statement from Apple regarding this plan. It is worth noting that Apple is yet to make a public announcement about its car plans and hence the company declined to comment on the subject as well. At the same time, CATL, the world's largest automotive battery maker, also declined to comment.
Many battery makers are ramping up production to meet rising demand around the world, as carmakers accelerate their shift to electric vehicles to comply with tougher emissions regulations aimed at combating global warming. Reuters reported last week that CATL is planning a major new automotive battery plant in Shanghai, continuing its rapid pace of expansion. The plant will strengthen the company's growth as the world's No. 1 supplier. At the same time, this factory will be near Tesla's China manufacturing operations.
