Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has reached Mumbai, as the Indian board gears up for an important meeting to discuss the issue of tax exemptions for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. Only then will a decision on hosting the T20 World Cup be taken. The T20 World Cup is scheduled in India in October-November. For this, the BCCI has to give a tax guarantee to the International Cricket Council by Tuesday.
Speaking to ANI, sources in the know of developments said that the former India captain is in Mumbai to discuss the issues related to hosting the mega event. The source said, “Sourav is in Mumbai as BCCI needs to discuss important matters related to hosting the World Cup. The matter of tax exemption needs to be clarified to the ICC by tomorrow, while on the issue of hosting the tournament. A decision is to be taken by June 28. So, some important decisions are likely to be taken in the next few days.
The BCCI is already in discussions with the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) to host the 2021 T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. has entered the race as a Darkhorse. With the UAE having three venues in Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Sri Lanka will have plenty of options, with three stadiums in Colombo alone.
Most interestingly, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board also expressed its intention to assist the BCCI in hosting the remaining 14th edition of the IPL in the September-October window. Sources further said that the host broadcasters may support India if they want to see Sri Lanka as an option.
The source added, “Look, these are tough times and with COVID-19 this is an ever-changing situation. So, if the host broadcasters see Sri Lanka as an option to host the T20 World Cup, they should be able to support the BCCI. There will be no objection. Keeping options open is not a bad thing." At the same time, BCCI has to take a decision on whether T20 World Cup 2021 can be organized in India or not by June 28.
