Amidst the outbreak of the Corona epidemic in Kerala, the Zika virus has knocked. Kerala Health Minister Veena George said on Thursday that cases of Zika virus have been reported in the state. This is the first time that cases of the Zika virus have been reported in Kerala. A 24-year-old pregnant woman was admitted last month with fever, headache and rash at a hospital in the state capital. Initial results of the investigation indicated a mild effect of the Zika virus. Later 19 samples were tested of which 13 reported Zika positive. Now all these samples have been sent to NIV Pune.
He said that taking the issue seriously, the Health Department and the district authorities have started the work of collecting samples of Aedes species mosquitoes. All the districts have been alerted about this and asked to take precautionary measures.
What are the symptoms of Zika virus?
Symptoms of the Zika virus are similar to those of dengue, including fever, a red rash on the skin, joint pain, and red eyes. A person infected with the Zika virus remains affected for 7 to 8 days. This virus mostly affects pregnant women. Due to this, the child born is born with an underdeveloped brain.
The Zika virus was rampant in Brazil in 2015, causing more than 1,600 babies to be born with the deformity.
The National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune had been successful in isolating the Zika virus for the first time in November 2018. The first case of the Zika virus was reported in India in January 2017. After this, its cases were also reported in Tamil Nadu in July 2017.
