Govinddas has been elected MLA from the Vishnupar seat for 6 times. He was appointed as the state president by Congress President Sonia Gandhi in December last year. Elections are also due in Manipur next year. In such a situation, this is a big crisis for Congress. For the first time in 2017, the BJP had won the Manipur Assembly elections. This time BJP claims that it will remain in power by winning 60 seats. BJP is in a coalition government with the support of NPP, NPF, and 3 independents. The alliance has a total of 36 MLAs.
However, Congress was successful in getting more seats than BJP in the 2017 elections. The Congress had won 28 seats, while the BJP had won 21 seats. NPF and NPP have won 4-4 seats.
In the current assembly, BJP has 25 members and Congress has 17. There are 4-4 members in NPP and NPF. Trinamool Congress has one MLA and 3 Independents. Four seats are lying vacant in the House.
