Veteran radical leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani from Pakistan passed away late on Wednesday night. With his death, the era of separatist politics in Kashmir has come to an end.He had been ill for the past several years and was pushed to the margins of Hurriyat politics for the time being. He was 92 years old.According to Geelani's family members, he will be handed over to Idgah Srinagar on Thursday. The administration has beefed up security in various parts of the valley including Srinagar as a precautionary measure. The roads leading to his house have been sealed.Apart from this, internet service has also reportedly been shut down to curb rumours.
At the last moment, he had his two sons Dr Naeem Gilani, Naseem Gilani besides his wife Jawahira Begum. His eldest son-in-law Altaf Shah is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with terror funding.Geelani has four daughters. One daughter is a teacher in Jeddah and her husband is an engineer.Known for a pro-Pakistan agenda, Geelani was earlier a member of Jamaat-e-Islami and later formed the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.He was the president of the radical faction of the Hurriyat and had to resign from the Hurriyat last year.
Heartfelt condolences to the family of Syed Ali Shah Geelani Sahib. Was an esteemed colleague of my late father. May Allah grant him Jannat.— Sajad Lone (@sajadlone) September 1, 2021
Geelani, who is counted among the strong pillars of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir, has also been a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. He was also elected MLA from the Sopar Assembly Constituency of Jammu and Kashmir in 1972, 1977 and 1987.Syed Ali Shah Geelani was born on 29 September 1929 in Bommai Sopore, North Kashmir. After doing his early studies in Sopore, he went to Pakistan for higher education and then returned to Kashmir.Syed Ali Shah Geelani, who did two marriages, had been living in Hyderpora on the outskirts of Srinagar for nearly 40 years. He was suffering from various ailments including heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes.
Rumors of death spread many times
Geelani died on the night of September 1, 2021, at 10.30 pm, but rumors about his death were raised several times by pro-Pakistan elements. For the first time in the year 2014, there was a rumor about his death and there was a curfew in Srinagar. After this it has happened about five more times. The separatists sitting in Ghulam Kashmir kept conspiring to spoil the atmosphere of Kashmir by spreading rumors of Geelani's death.
Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has condoled Geelani's death. She wrote on her Twitter handle that of course we did not agree on many issues, but I always respect her for her candor, her commitment to our principles.People's Conference leader Sajjad Gani Lone also condoled the death of Geelani.
Hurriyat kept away from electoral politics because of Geelani
After being active in electoral politics for years, he always opposed elections in Jammu and Kashmir after 1987.In the year 2002, when preparations were made for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, there seemed to be an agreement to contest the elections in the Hurriyat Conference as well.Things got stalled due to Geelani's attitude and after the killing of People's Conference chairman Abdul Ghani Lone by terrorists. After this, the differences between Geelani and Mirwaiz Maulvi Umar Farooq increased. As a result, Geelani split in the Hurriyat Conference in 2003 and then became the chairman of the radical Hurriyat. In 2003, he also formed the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and in 2018 he handed over its command to Mohammad Ashraf Sahrai.Sahrai also passed away on May 5 this year.
Was also involved in the violent demonstrations of 2009 and 10
Separatist Syed Ali Shah Geelani tried to prove himself as the accepted leader of Kashmiri separatists and always tried to keep himself ahead. He supported talks to resolve the Kashmir problem, but always conditional.Since he remained a hanger of Pakistan and that is the reason why Pakistan always supported his Hurriyat.Geelani's role in the violent protests of 2009, 2010, and 2016 has been the most important. He remained under house arrest for most of the time he was in Srinagar after the violent protests in 2008.After 2014, he rarely came out of the house and whenever he went out for treatment in the hospital. After August 5, 2019, no one saw him out of the house and he was confined to bed.
kept closing the school himself, kept getting jobs
The allegations of controversy and bargaining were also on him a lot.Sajjad Gani Lone held him responsible for his father's murder not once but many times.Muslim Conference chairman Abdul Ghani Butt also said many times that our own people have got our loved ones killed.Geelani has been accused of turning the children of others into jihadis and providing government jobs to relatives. In 2016, when he was announcing a bandh in Kashmir, closing schools, his granddaughter was taking exams in a missionary school. His grandson was given a job in 2016 by the PDP-BJP coalition government with a package of 20 lakhs annually, ignoring the rules. His son Naeem Gilani, along with his wife and children, had returned from Pakistan soon after the violent protests in 2010.
