Taking a big step towards making Northeast India free from militancy, the Center and the Assam government have signed agreements with six militant outfits from the Karbi Anglong region. This is the fourth important agreement for lasting peace and development in the Northeast in the last two years after Amit Shah became the Home Minister.Prior to this, agreements have been signed with the National Liberation Front of Tripura, rehabilitation of Bru families and Bodo separatist organizations.
During the signing of the Karbi Anglong Agreement, Amit Shah said that the 'Karbi Pact' will prove to be another milestone in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a 'militant free prosperous Northeast'.He said that for the restoration of peace in the Northeast, agreements have been signed with militant organizations in the past, but due to non-fulfillment of them, militancy could not be stopped. But whatever agreement the Modi government has made in the last seven years, it has also been fully implemented.
He said that it is the policy of the Modi government to integrate the weapons into the mainstream of development by talking more politely with those who come and giving more than what they ask for.As a result of this, we are eliminating the old inherited problems one by one.
Tripartite agreement has also been signed with Karbi Anglong before this in 1995 and 2011, but for the first time all five extremist organizations from Karbi Anglong are People's Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK), Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF), Karbi Peoples. The Liberation Tigers (KPLT), the Kuki Liberation Front (KLF) and the United People's Liberation Army (UPLA) signed the agreement after fully laying down arms.
More than 1000 cadres of the five militant outfits ready for settlement surrendered with their weapons on February 23 this year and arrangements are being made for their rehabilitation.Under the agreement signed on Saturday, Rs 1000 crore will be spent for the development of Karbi Anglong area in the next five years.
Under the agreement, maximum powers will be transferred to the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council while ensuring the territorial and administrative integrity of Assam. This will save the culture, language, identity of the Karbi people as well as the development of the region will be possible.Along with this, Karbi Welfare Council will be set up for the development of Karbi people living outside the area of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council.
