Fatima Shaikh, along with social reformers Jyoti Ba Phule and Savitri Bai Phule, started the Swadeshi Library in 1848, it is believed to be the first girls' school in the country. Fatima Sheikh was born on this day i.e. 9 January 1831 in Pune. She lived with her brother Usman. When the Phule couple was thrown out of the house by their father for protesting against the education of the downtrodden and the poor, Usman Sheikh and Fatima gave them shelter.
The Swadeshi Library was established in the house of Sheikh. It was here that Fatima Sheikh and Phule couple started the work of imparting education to the poor and deprived sections of the society and Muslim women. In this school of Pune, Mahayagya was started to educate those people, who were denied education at that time on the basis of caste, religion and gender.
She used to go from house to house to call the children,
Fatima usedto go from house to house to invite thechildren to study in her house. She wanted the underprivileged children to come and study in the library by crossing the barriers of the Indian caste system. Like the Phule couple, she was engaged in the struggle for education and equality throughout her life.In this mission, he also faced heavy obstacles. The influential section of society put obstacles in his work. They were harassed, but Sheikh and his associates did not give up.
