Sanket Mahadev Sargar: Sanket Mahadev won India's first medal in Commonwealth, Silver in Weightlifting

Mohamed Aneek of Malaysia won the gold medal.

India's account has been opened in the Commonwealth Games 2022. Weightlifter Sanket Mahadev Sargar won the first medal. He opened India's account by winning a silver medal in the men's 55 kg event.

Sanket Mahadev Sargar lifted a total of 248 kg

India's star weightlifter Sanket Mahadev Sargar performed brilliantly in the Commonwealth Games lifting a total of 248 kg and won the first medal for India.


Anik Kasdan of Malaysia won the gold

Malaysia's weightlifter Aneek Kasdan won the gold medal by lifting 249 kg. While Dilanka Kumara of Sri Lanka won the bronze medal by lifting 225 kg.

Signals missed the gold medal by one kg

Sargar, 21, from Maharashtra's Sangli district, was on his way to a gold medal but missed out on a kilo after two failed attempts in clean and jerk. He won the silver medal by lifting 248 kg (113 and 135 kg). Mohamed Anik of Malaysia won the gold medal by lifting a total of 249 kg by creating a new Games record in clean and jerk. He lifted 107 kg in snatch and 142 kg in clean and jerk. Dilanka Isuru Kumara of Sri Lanka won the bronze medal by lifting 225 kg.

Sanket stays behind Gold due to injury

Sagar had topped the snatch but was successful in only one attempt in the clean and jerk in which he lifted 135 kg. After that due to injury he could not lift 139 kg in the second and third attempt. Last time India won five gold in weightlifting Won nine medals. Ko P Gururaja (61kg), Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu (49kg) and S Bindiyarani Devi (55kg) will also be in the race for a medal.
