CWG 2022: Lakshya Sen 4th Indian to win gold in men's singles badminton, 20th to India

India's Lakshya Sen has won the gold medal in men's singles badminton. In the final, he defeated Ang Jae Yong of Malaysia 19-21, 21-9, 21-16. With this gold, Lakshya became the 10th player from India to win a medal in men's singles at the Commonwealth Games and the fourth athlete to win a gold. Prakash Padukone, Syed Modi and Parupalli Kashyap have won gold before Lakshya. 

In Badminton Men's Singles, Dinesh Khanna (1966, Bronze), Prakash Padukone (1978, Gold), Syed Modi (1982, Gold), Pullela Gopichand (1998, Bronze), Chetan Anand (2006, Bronze), Parupalli Kashyap (2010, Bronze), Parupalli Kashyap (2014, Gold), Gurusai Dutt (2014, Bronze), Kidambi Srikanth (2018, Silver), Kidambi Srikanth (2022, Bronze) have won medals in Commonwealth Games.

Lakshya took Srikanth's revenge

This is India's 20th gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. India's total medal tally has reached 57. With the victory over Malaysian player Jay Yong, Lakshya Sen also took revenge for Kidambi Srikanth. Yong had defeated Srikanth 13-21, 21-19, 21-10 in the semi-finals. Srikanth had to settle for bronze in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Lakshya has played three matches against Ang Jae Yong so far and has won all three.

Malaysian player won the first game

The Malaysian player showed a great game in the first game. He tries to tire Lakshya Sen and hits on smashes. However, India's Lakshya Sen put up a tough challenge and did not allow Ang Jae Yong to win easily. The Malaysian won the first game 21–19. Lakshya made several unforced errors in the first game, which resulted in him suffering.

Lakshya made a comeback from the second game

Lakshya got off to a positive start in the second game. Jae Yong took the lead in the beginning, but Lakshya leveled the score first at 6-6. Then slowly he started taking the lead. After this the Malaysian could reach only nine points. At the same time, Lakshya won the second game by securing 15 points. Lakshya won the second game 21-9 in a one-sided fashion. The scores were thus leveled one game at a time and the match progressed to the decider of the third game.

Lakshya smashed Malaysian player in third game

Lakshya got off to a great start in the third and deciding game. First they took the lead 11-8. After this there was a tremendous competition between the two. However, Lakshya then made smashes on the smash and piled the Malaysian on the court. Lakshya Sen won the third game 21-16.

Achievements of Lakshya Sen

In 2018, he won bronze at the World Junior Championships. Lakshya had won gold in 2018 and bronze in 2016 at the Asian Junior Championships.
