Abhishek Banerjee has been asked to appear in the ED's office in Kolkata on Friday morning.
West Bengal: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday summoned Trinamool Congress national general secretary and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee for questioning in connection with the probe into the coal theft scam. The central agency has asked Abhishek Banerjee to appear at its Kolkata office on Friday morning. At the same time, senior TMC leader and MP Saugata Roy has targeted the BJP and the central government while reacting sharply to the issue of summons by the ED to Abhishek Banerjee.
ED being misused: TMC MP
On summoning the TMC leader of the ED, MP Saugata Roy said that Abhishek Banerjee will cooperate with the central probe agency with his head held high as usual. Terming it as vendetta politics, Saugata Roy said that I condemn this action of ED. The TMC MP said that ED is being misused for political purposes not only in Bengal but in Delhi, Maharashtra, Bihar and Jharkhand. He said that I am sure that the people of the country will see this and will join our demand to make the ED an independent and neutral organisation.
Mamta Banerjee had expressed this apprehension
Here, the ED official has said that this notice was sent to Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday. He said that our officers from New Delhi will come to question him in connection with the coal theft scam. Let us inform that earlier, Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a program on Monday, apprehension that central agencies may send notices to her nephew and other senior leaders. It is known that the ED is also investigating cases of illegal mining and smuggling of coal in Bengal. In this case, the ED has already questioned Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee.
