Shradh is a ritual performed by the family members of the deceased ancestors for the peace of the departed soul. Pitru Paksha is a special time of the year. It is believed that the souls of our dead ancestors come to earth in the form of energy for 16 days from full moon to new moon during Bhadrapada month. These energies can influence our lives as they wish. During this period, food, clothes and donations are given to the Brahmin priests who help in performing the Shradh rituals. Cows, dogs and crows are fed food. In Hinduism, Brahmins are considered the primary servants of God and are the link between a common man and the Supreme Power. Pitru Paksha is considered to be the most auspicious time for our deceased ancestors. Keeping them happy through various good deeds is one of the practices of attaining liberation or salvation.
