Apart from being the center of education, Patna University is also the nursery of politics in Bihar. Once again the election atmosphere has started with the announcement of the student union on the campus. The leaders who came out of student politics are giving direction to the politics of Bihar today. Be it Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi or Union Ministers Ravi Shankar Prasad, Ashwini Choubey and Ram Vilas Paswan, Patna University is the product of the students' union. In 1970, for the first time, voting was held on the basis of direct election, in which Lalu Prasad Yadav became the general secretary of politics.

PU Students Union was established in 1956

PU Students Union was established in the year 1956. From then until 1968, all the representatives of the student union were indirectly elected. In 1968, the students of the university met the then Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Kalikinkar Dutt, demanding direct elections. After this, a public opinion was held, after which it was decided that now the representatives of the student union would be elected through direct elections. On March 9, 1970, voting was held for the first time on the basis of direct election.

Lalu became general secretary in the first election

Elections were held for the first time in PU in the year 1970, when Lalu Prasad became the General Secretary. Then in 1971 elections were held. In this, Ram Jatan Sinha and Lalu Prasad were face to face for the post of president. Lalu Prasad was defeated in this. Ramjatan Sinha became the president and Narendra Singh became the general secretary. In the elections held in 1973, Lalu Prasad became the President, Sushil Kumar Modi became the General Secretary and Ravi Shankar Prasad became the Assistant General Secretary. After this, in the elections held in 1977, Ashwini Choubey became the President of Patna University Students Union. Anil Sharma in 1980 and Ranvir Nandan became General Secretary in 1984. By the year 1984, violence had reached its peak in the student union elections. The situation had become such that the candidates started campaigning with weapons. Due to the lack of age limit, people kept doing politics by becoming students to shine the leadership. As a result, there was an undeclared ban on the student union elections.

Ashish Sinha became the President in 2012

After the ban, after a long gap of 28 years, the student union elections were held in PU on 11 December 2012. In this, the contest for the post of President was between Ashish Sinha of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyalaya Parishad and Divya Gautam of All India Student Association. In this, Ashish won the president. AISA supported Anshuman won the vice-president. AISF's Anshu Kumari became the general secretary while student JDU's Anupriya became the secretary.

Divyanshu became the president in the 2018 elections

After this, the student union election was held on 17 February 2018, in which independent candidate Divyanshu Bhardwaj became the president of PU student union. At the same time Yoshita Patwardhan, the candidate of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, became the vice-president. Sudhanshu Bhushan Jha was declared as Vice President, Mohd Ashjad Joint Secretary and Nitish Kumar as Treasurer.

Mohit became the president in the 2018 elections

In the student union elections of December 5, 2018, Mohit Prakash of student JDU became president, Kumar Satyam of student JDU as treasurer, Anjana Singh of ABVP as vice-president, Manikant Mani as general secretary and Raja Ravi of ABVP as joint secretary.

Manish became the president in the 2019 elections

The student union elections on December 7, 2019, were dominated by the Chhatra Jaap and AISF alliance. Manish Yadav, the coalition's candidate for the post of president, was victorious. Student RJD's Nishant was victorious on the post of vice-president. The post of General Secretary was won by Priyanka Srivastava of ABVP and the post of Joint Secretary was won by Amir Raja of the alliance of Chhatra Jaap and AISF. Komal Kumari of AISA was victorious on the post of treasurer.
