Ila Bhatt is known as the famous Gandhian. He made a lot of efforts for the economic empowerment of women. Ela Bhatt had formed an organization of women to empower them which is known as (Self Employed Women Association) Seva. Ila Bhatt also founded a women's bank for women. He founded the cooperative bank of SEWA in 1973. In 1979 she founded the World Bank for Women.

Was honored with Gandhi Peace Prize in 2011 

Ela Bhatt has been given the country's fourth highest award Padma Shri in 1985. After that, in 1986, he was given the Padma Bhushan. In 2011, he was given the Gandhi Peace Prize. He was also awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1977. Ila Bhatt also did a lot of work against gender sensitivity and child marriage.
