In Punjab, it has been made mandatory to use 20% straw as fuel for brick kilns. The Punjab government has taken this important decision in view of the problem of increasing pollution from stubble. Strict action will be taken against those who violate it after May 1, 2023.

In a press statement on Sunday, Minister for Environment and Science and Technology Gurmeet Singh Meet Hare said that under the direction of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the state government has issued a notification on Sunday that 20 percent of straw bales can be used as fuel in brick kilns. Compulsory use. The kiln owners have been given about six months to prepare for the new management. After May 1, 2023, action will be taken against those who do not implement these instructions. 

Meet Hare informed that in-situ and ex-situ work is being done by the state government to help farmers in stubble management and to tackle the problem of pollution caused by stubble burning. While in-situ about 1.25 lakh machines were provided on subsidy to the farmers of Punjab for stubble management, under ex-situ industries are being encouraged to use stubble as fuel.

Efforts are being made to generate CNG, electricity and other energy resources from stubble. Meet Heyer said that under the new decision, 20 percent use of stubble as fuel in brick kilns will encourage the management of stubble and farmers will also get financial help by selling stubble. For the new management, every technical support will be provided to the brick kilns by the Department of Environment and Science Technology. According to the issued notification, all the Deputy Commissioners have been instructed to follow these instructions.

The state produces about 20 million tonnes of stubble every year. These days, the central government, including Haryana, is constantly accusing Punjab of stubble burning. Meanwhile, the agreement with Kerala regarding stubble is being considered as a big decision of the Punjab government. Due to less cultivable land in the coastal state of Kerala, which does not produce the required fodder for the livestock, Kerala has decided to take stubble from Punjab.
