The former Union minister had recently expressed his desire to step down from the post due to his health reasons in the party meeting.

Will not boycott any election in future

After being re-elected president of the National Conference, Abdullah said that he wanted to relinquish the post so that the youth would lead the party. Addressing the session of National Conference representatives, Abdullah said that I want to say that the boycott of the Panchayat elections (2018) by the party was a big mistake. Farooq advised Umar to contest elections

Omar Abdullah, son of Farooq Abdullah and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, had announced that he will not contest elections as long as Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory. In this context, he said that being the party president, I instruct you (Omar Abdullah) that you have to contest the elections. BJP will fail in its plans

The former Union Minister said that the BJP can do anything. She may even try to buy your loyalty, but she will fail in all her plans. Abdullah warned the security forces and the government to avoid any interference in the elections to be held in Jammu and Kashmir. He said let the people decide whom to vote for. Otherwise such a storm will come, which you will not be able to control. Along with this, the National Conference leader threatened to agitate in case of irregularities in the elections. He said that we are ready to sacrifice our lives. Farooq Abdullah will be the first person to start a movement against it.
