Former Law Minister and senior advocate Shanti Bhushan passed away on Tuesday.

Former Law Minister and senior advocate Shanti Bhushan passed away on Tuesday. He was 97 years old. He breathed his last at his residence in Delhi. It was Shanti Bhushan who represented Rajnarayan in a very famous case in the Allahabad High Court. In 1974, Indira Gandhi was ordered to step down from the post of Prime Minister. He served as the Law Minister of India from 1977 to 1979 in the Morarji Desai ministry.

Former Law Minister Shanti Bhushan had filed a PIL in the Supreme Court in 2018 demanding a change in the 'master of roster' system. It was pleaded in the petition that the principle and procedure for sending cases to a bench under the roster should be decided. Shanti Bhushan had filed this petition through his son and lawyer Prashant Bhushan.

Shanti Bhushan was an active member of the Congress (O) party and later of the Janata Party. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 14 July 1977 to 2 April 1980. In 1980, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 1986, when the Bharatiya Janata Party did not accept his advice on an election petition, he resigned from the party. Shanti Bhushan and his son Prashant Bhushan were actively involved in the Anna movement.
