The Supreme Court will hear after three weeks a petition seeking probe into the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf. The petition sought setting up of an independent expert committee headed by a former Supreme Court judge to probe the murder of Atiq-Ashraf in the presence of the police.

Why was the vehicle carrying mafia brothers Atiq and Ashraf not taken directly to the hospital? On this, the Uttar Pradesh government said that they have appointed a commission to investigate the matter. Mukul Rohatgi appeared in the court on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government. The Supreme Court said that we have seen the incident on TV. Why were both not taken directly to the hospital by car. Why was his parade being conducted?

Report sought from UP government

I also sought a report from the UP government on the police encounter of Ahmed's son Asad. Asad was killed in an encounter by a Special Task Force (ST) team of the UP Police on 13 April. Two days later, Ateeq Ahmed and Ashraf were shot dead by three men posing as media persons.

Now the matter will be heard after three weeks

When he was being taken to a medical college in Prayagraj for a health check-up amid police security. The petition has been filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari, a top court lawyer. The petition has sought a probe into 183 encounters in Uttar Pradesh since 2017. Now the matter will be heard after three weeks.

Former IPS also filed letter petition

By filing a letter petition, there was a demand for a CBI inquiry into the murder of Atiq Ahmed and his brother under the supervision of the Supreme Court or the High Court. Amitabh Thakur had said in the petition that even though Atiq Ahmed and his brother were criminals, the manner in which they were killed showed ample possibility of state funding of the incident.
