IPS Praveen Sood, who was the DGP of Karnataka, took charge on the post of Director of CBI on Thursday.

Senior IPS officer of 1986 batch Praveen Sood took over as the Director General of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday. He was the Director General of Police in Karnataka before coming to this post. On his last working day, outgoing director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal handed over the charge of the agency to Sood at its headquarters here, officials said. After taking charge of the CBI Director General, Praveen Sood held a meeting with the officers and inquired about important matters. Praveen Sood is a native of Himachal Pradesh. He has been appointed for a period of 2 years, but the tenure can be extended up to 5 years.

Praveen Sood is the senior most IPS officer of the country after Subodh Kumar Jaiswal. Sood's name was cleared at a meeting of a high-powered committee comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice Justice DY Chandrachud and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Congress leader Chaudhary is said to have given a dissenting note on Sood's selection as the next CBI director. Actually, the process of appointment and selection of CBI Director is quite tedious as it has to pass through many levels and filters.

The first name in PM Modi's list was that of Praveen Sood

A senior IPS officer working in the Ministry of Home Affairs said that Praveen Sood was at the top of the Prime Minister's list. He was appointed by two of the three members of a high-powered committe-Prime Minister Modi and Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud unanimously elected. However, the committee had shortlisted the names of Madhya Pradesh DGP Sudhir Kumar Saxena and Director General of Fire Services, Civil Defense and Home Guard Taj Hasan along with him.

Experience of 37 years of long tenure, worked on many important positions

IPS officer Praveen Sood has worked on many important posts during his long tenure of nearly 37 years in IPS. These included the SPs of Bellary and Raichur; Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Bengaluru City; Commissioner of Police, Mysore City and Bengaluru City; ADGP; Principal Secretary (Home); Posts like DGP (Internal Security) and DGP (CID) are included. He has worked as an advisor to the Government of Mauritius.
