There is no news of any casualty due to the collapse of the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge connecting Bhagalpur with Khagaria district.

A bridge under construction on the Ganga river collapsed in Bihar's Bhagalpur district on Sunday. State government officials claimed that parts of the bridge were deliberately demolished in a planned manner under expert advice as it had design flaws.

There is no news of any casualty due to the collapse of the Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge connecting Bhagalpur to Khagaria district. After the pictures of this incident in Khagaria surfaced, the opposition attacked the government. After this, Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav and Additional Chief Secretary of Road Construction Department Pratyay Amrit organized a press conference in a hurry.

What did Tejashwi Yadav say?

Tejashwi Yadav said, let me remind you that on April 30 last year a part of this bridge had collapsed. Thereafter, we approached IIT-Roorkee, known for its expertise in construction matters, to conduct a study. Its final report is yet to come but experts who have studied the structure have informed us that it has serious flaws.

"It was decided that we should not take any risk, so it was decided to demolish some parts of the bridge," he said. Today's incident was a part of one such exercise. He said that after the final report comes, the state government will take action to blacklist and file an FIR against the company that was given the contract for the project.

It is said that the estimated cost of this project is Rs 1,700 crore. Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Bihar unit president Samrat Chowdhary said the incident shows that corruption is rampant under the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government.

He said, substandard material has been used in the construction of the bridge. The Chief Minister is not at all concerned about the development of Bihar... He is busy on his tour. After this incident, he should resign from his post. Significantly, in November last year, a laborer was killed and another injured when a part of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Nalanda district.
