In the year 2023, the estimated population of Muslims in the country will be 19.75 crore. In response to a written question by TMC's Mala Roy, Minority Affairs Minister Smriti Irani said that according to the 2011 census, the Muslim population is 17.22 crore, which is 14.2 percent of the country's total population. Irani said, according to the report of the Technical Group on Population Projections released in July 2020, the estimated population of the country in 2023 will be 1388 million. Thus, applying the same ratio of 14.2 percent, the estimated population of Muslims in 2023 would be 197.5 million.

35.1% Muslim in the labor force

The minister informed that according to the Periodic Labor Force Survey 2021-22 conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, the literacy rate of Muslims aged seven years and above is 77.7 percent. At the same time, the participation rate of Muslims in the labor force of all ages is 35.1 percent. According to the Multiple Indicator Survey 2020-21 conducted by the ministry, 94.9 percent of the Muslim population in the country has access to clean drinking water, while 97.2 percent of Muslims have access to improved toilet facilities.
