Monsoon Session: Rajnath Singh talks to senior opposition leaders over phone, appeals to end deadlock in Parliament

Union Minister Rajnath Singh had a telephonic conversation with senior opposition leaders regarding the disruption of Parliament over their demands related to the situation in Manipur and urged them to ensure smooth functioning of Parliament.

Union Minister Rajnath Singh had a telephonic conversation with senior leaders of the opposition regarding the disruption of Parliament over their demands related to the status of Manipur and urged them to ensure smooth functioning of Parliament. BJP sources said Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandopadhyay are among those the government has approached to end the impasse in Parliament.
 
He said that Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi and Minister of State Arjun Ram Meghwal are contacting the opposition leaders for the smooth functioning of Parliament. As the opposition continued to protest over its demands, Deputy Leader of the House in Lok Sabha Rajnath Singh on Monday said the government is ready for a discussion in Parliament.
 
He said, 'We are ready for discussion in Parliament. The Manipur incident is certainly a very serious matter and realizing the seriousness of the situation, the Prime Minister himself has said that what happened in the state (Wednesday's viral video purportedly shows two women being paraded naked) has brought shame to the entire nation.'
 
The Defense Minister had last week also spoken in the House about the government's willingness to discuss the situation in Manipur. The opposition parties are demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement in Parliament on the situation in Manipur and a detailed discussion after postponing all other listed business. Several opposition MPs on Monday gave adjournment notices to discuss the Manipur issue.

Dhankhar also held a meeting with leaders of various parties in the House

As Rajya Sabha proceedings were disrupted for the third consecutive day due to opposition's uproar over violence in Manipur, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday called a meeting of leaders of all parties in the House. He appealed for their cooperation for smooth proceedings. In this meeting Jairam Ramesh of Congress, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) K.K. Several leaders including Keshav Rao, Sasmit Patra of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Raghav Chadha of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Leader of the House Piyush Goyal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi attended.

Parliament's proceedings were constantly disrupted

Since the commencement of the monsoon session of the Parliament on July 20, the proceedings of the Parliament have been continuously interrupted due to the demands of the opposition. On Monday, opposition leaders raised slogans and displayed placards in the Lok Sabha regarding their demands. He also demanded to raise his demands in the Rajya Sabha. The government has a heavy legislative agenda for the monsoon session of Parliament which ends on August 11.
