These days there is a lot of discussion about UCC in the country. Some are expressing concern about UCC and some are supporting it. At the same time, disability rights organizations and activists have urged the Law Commission to include the UCC with the existing laws related to protecting the rights of disabled people.

About 220 disabled rights organizations and activists gave suggestions

The Law Commission has sought public opinion regarding UCC, in which disabled rights organizations have also put forward their views. About 220 disability rights organizations and activists expressed their concerns and suggestions from the point of view of disability to the Law Commission.

Emphasis on protecting the rights of the disabled

Supported by prominent activists, advocates and persons with disabilities, their request letter stressed the need to protect the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and ensure that their voices are heard while finalizing the UCC. Disability rights activists have urged an approach to address the problems faced by the disabled and to protect their rights.

Disability rights organizations stressed the importance of aligning the UCC with existing laws protecting the rights of persons with disabilities, such as the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and the Mental Health Care Act, 2017. These groups expressed concern in the request letter that persons with disabilities may be affected if the UCC is implemented without due consideration.
