The BJP has strongly condemned the incident, but at the same time questions are being raised about the timing of making the video viral. The video went viral a day before the monsoon session began on July 20.

Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance

The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance in this matter and termed it as a gross violation of very constitutional rights. Fixing the next hearing on July 28, the top court had sought an explanation from the central and state governments and asked them to ensure that such incidents do not recur. At the same time, several petitions related to ethnic violence in Manipur were to be heard in the Supreme Court on July 28. However, the hearing was postponed due to ill health of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra are also included in this bench. It will also hear a fresh petition which is directly related to the May 4 incident in Manipur.

However, the identity of the petitioners in this case (they are mentioned as x and y) have been withheld. A record reveals that the petition is in respect of First Information Report (FIR) No. (110)(6)(2023). Zero FIR regarding this incident was registered at Saikul police station in Kangpokpi district. Later it was transferred to Nongpok Sekmai police station in Thoubal district. In this FIR, the village head of the village where the incident took place has identified the attackers as people from Meitei groups. It stated that three Kuki women were stripped, paraded naked, assaulted, one of them gang-raped, and her father and brother killed by a mob after the family assaulted them. At the same time, the accused have been released from the custody of the police team.
