In the first two months of the current financial year, 2,784 cases of GST evasion involving Rs 14,302 crore were detected, while a tax recovery of Rs 5,716 crore was made during the period. The Central Government gave this information in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave details of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Income Tax evasion and detection of smuggling cases by the Customs Department.
As per the data, GST tax evasion of Rs 2.68 lakh crore was detected in 43,516 cases between 2020-21 to 2023-24 (April-May). Rs 76,333 crore was recovered during this period, while 1,020 people were arrested.
According to the minister's reply, 2,784 cases of GST evasion involving Rs 14,302 crore were detected in the current financial year (April-May). During this period, 28 people were arrested and Rs 5,716 crore was seized. According to the survey, search and seizure statistics conducted by the Income Tax Department in the last five years, 3,946 groups were raided and assets worth Rs 6,662 crore were seized.
