Supreme Court has summoned the status report from the UP government on the investigation of 183 encounters in the state since 2017. The apex court has asked how many of these cases were found to be suspicious. Who among them were arrested and what is the status of the cases at present? The court has asked the UP government to file its reply in four weeks.
A bench of Justice S. Ravindra Bhat and Justice Arvind Kumar gave this direction while hearing a petition questioning the investigation into the murder of mafia Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf. The bench said that the police can also have a role to play in these cases. The top court also raised the question that how did those who killed Atiq know where he was being taken? Although the court has made it clear that instead of hearing any one case, it will consider making guidelines for the future. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi and advocate general Ajay Kumar Mishra, appearing for the UP government, told the bench that closure reports have been filed in 144 encounters out of 183.
