The disaster in Summerhill of the capital also exposed the claims of the government and the administration. The incident which took place at 7:15 am was informed to the corporator, police and administration. But it took hours to start the relief work.
In order to find the missing loved ones in the debris, people started removing the debris with their own hands. According to the people, army personnel from the adjoining army colony first reached the spot at 8 am. He started the work of removing debris along with the people present on the spot.
At around 8:15, police and local councilor Virendra Thakur also reached the spot. Machines were needed to remove the debris but the road to the temple had collapsed. The bodies of two children were recovered by the jawans who descended into the drain at around 8:30 am. The third body was recovered at 9 o'clock. Seeing the dead bodies of loved ones, there was a hue and cry on the spot. Cutters were called from the local people to cut trees on the spot.
SDRF personnel reached the spot after about two hours at 9:30 am. Speeding up the relief work, the work of removing debris from the top of the temple was started. A JCB was standing on the spot but there was no oil in it. At around 1:00 pm, the first JCB from the administration reached the spot.
People said, disaster management failed, many lives could have been saved
People were enraged at the non-availability of machinery in the relief work on the spot and the delayed arrival of the administration teams. Said that what is the use of such disaster management. Had the relief work started on time, many lives could have been saved. Ward councilor Virendra Thakur also raised questions.
Said that a JCB reached the spot hours after the accident. Former councilor Shaili Sharma said that the accident happened before 8:00 am. Had the relief work been completed in two to three hours, many lives would have been saved. Said that many people have lost relatives in Summerhill.
Screams as bodies emerge
As soon as the incident was known, a crowd of people gathered on the spot. Many people kept searching for their loved ones in the debris. Saurav, a 17-year-old youth from Summerhill, also went missing in the debris. The young man's mother kept searching for her beloved on the spot throughout the day. By afternoon many families reached the spot who were horrified at the disappearance of their loved ones in the debris.
As the dead bodies kept coming out, there were screams. The hands and feet of several bodies were recovered from the debris on the spot. People were shocked to see this scene. The bhandara hall of the temple, the residence of the priest was also buried under the debris. According to people, these days the priest was alone in Shimla. His family had gone to the village. Three bikes have also been taken out from the debris.
Kheer was being made on Monday
According to the people, kheer was being made since morning for Monday. Heavy rain also hampered the rescue operation. In the evening, amidst heavy rains, stones and debris again started falling on the spot. So the operation had to be stopped. It is being told that the rescue operation will continue on Tuesday as well.
