Tesla Elon Musk and US Back India Bid for UNSC Permanent Membership

Discover how support from Tesla’s Elon Musk and the United States is bolstering India’s bid for permanent membership in the UN Security Council.

The push for India's permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has received a significant boost, with backing from influential figures like Tesla Chief Elon Musk and now, the United States. Just a few months ago, Elon Musk had vocally advocated for India's inclusion as a permanent member, labeling the absence of India from the UNSC as “absurd.” Now, America has echoed similar sentiments, expressing support for reforms within the United Nations to reflect the realities of the 21st century.

Vedant Patel, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department, affirmed America's stance on UN reform, stating, “We certainly support reforms in other UN institutions, including the Security Council, to reflect the 21st century world we live in.” Responding to Musk's remarks, Patel emphasized the need for improvements within the UN system, aligning with India's aspirations for a permanent seat in the UNSC.

Elon Musk's assertion in January underscored the anomaly of India's exclusion from the permanent membership of the UNSC, given its status as the world's most populous country. He highlighted the reluctance of certain countries to relinquish excess power, calling for a reassessment of the UN's composition. Musk's advocacy resonated with India's longstanding demand for a permanent seat in the Security Council to better represent the interests of the developing world.

India's pursuit of permanent membership has garnered momentum, buoyed by international support. The UNSC, consisting of 15 member states, includes five permanent members with veto power and ten non-permanent members serving two-year terms. India's inclusion as a permanent member would not only address the existing imbalance but also reflect the evolving global landscape.

As India continues to press for reform within the UNSC, backed by influential voices like Elon Musk and now the United States, the quest for a more inclusive and representative international body gains further traction.
