The Supreme Court is hearing multiple petitions regarding the controversial NEET-UG 2024 exam, including allegations of malpractice and requests for a re-examination.

The Supreme Court of India is currently hearing multiple petitions related to the controversial medical entrance exam ‘NEET-UG’ 2024. These petitions include allegations of malpractice in the NEET-UG exam held on May 5, various irregularities, and requests for a direction to conduct the exam again.

A Total of 38 Petitions in the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is addressing a total of 38 petitions concerning the NEET-UG 2024 exam. Last Friday, the Center and the National Testing Agency (NTA) informed the court that canceling the exam without any concrete evidence of a breach of confidentiality would have a very adverse impact. They argued that such a move would negatively affect lakhs of candidates who have no involvement in these allegations. The bench, comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Mishra, is presiding over the hearings.

NTA Conducts the Exam

The NTA is responsible for conducting the NEET-UG, which is a gateway for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related courses in both government and private institutions. This year, the exam was held on May 5. Approximately 23 lakh candidates appeared for the exam at 4,750 examination centers across 571 cities. The exam has been marred by protests in several cities over allegations of irregularities, including a question paper leak.

Counselling Postponed Till Further Notice

Due to the ongoing controversies and legal proceedings, NEET UG counselling has been postponed until further notice. There is a growing demand to cancel the NEET-UG 2024 exam amidst the swirling allegations and protests.

Impact on Students

The ongoing legal battle and the postponement of counselling have left students in a state of uncertainty. Many candidates and their families are anxious about the future of their medical education. The stakes are high, as NEET-UG is a crucial exam for aspiring medical students in India, determining their admission to prestigious medical colleges.

Arguments Presented

During the hearings, the petitioners have argued that the integrity of the exam has been compromised due to the alleged irregularities. They demand a thorough investigation and, if necessary, a re-examination to ensure a fair selection process. On the other hand, the NTA and the Center maintain that canceling the exam without solid proof would be unjust to the majority of candidates who took the exam honestly.

Next Steps

The Supreme Court’s decision will be pivotal in determining the next steps for NEET-UG 2024. If the court finds merit in the allegations, it could order a re-examination or other corrective measures. Meanwhile, students and stakeholders await the verdict with bated breath, hoping for a resolution that upholds the integrity of the examination process.

The controversy surrounding NEET-UG 2024 has highlighted significant concerns regarding the conduct of high-stakes exams in India. As the Supreme Court continues to hear the petitions, the outcome will have far-reaching implications for the future of medical entrance examinations in the country. All eyes are on the court as it navigates through the complexities of this case, aiming to deliver a just and fair verdict.
