Former Indian team opener batsman Gautam Gambhir has been given a significant new responsibility as he has been appointed the new chief coach of the Indian cricket team. Gautam Gambhir takes over this prestigious role from Rahul Dravid. The announcement was made by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah, who expressed his pleasure in welcoming Gambhir to this pivotal position. Shah emphasized that modern cricket has evolved rapidly and highlighted Gambhir’s firsthand experience of this changing landscape. Shah noted that Gambhir, having faced numerous challenges throughout his career and having excelled in various roles, is the ideal person to propel Indian cricket forward.

BCCI Places Full Confidence in Gambhir

In his official statement, Jay Shah wrote, ‘’Gautam Gambhir’s clear vision for Team India, coupled with his extensive experience, positions him perfectly for this exciting and demanding coaching role. The BCCI fully supports him on this new journey.’’ Gambhir’s appointment was also notable for the fact that he was chosen over other contenders, including WV Raman, the former coach of the Indian women’s team. Jay Shah also took the opportunity to wish former coach Rahul Dravid all the best for his future endeavors. Shah expressed his heartfelt gratitude towards Dravid, acknowledging his highly successful tenure as head coach. Shah wrote, ‘’Under Rahul Dravid’s guidance, Team India emerged as a formidable force in all formats, including winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. His strategic acumen, relentless efforts to nurture talent, and exemplary leadership have fostered a culture of excellence within the team. This is the legacy he leaves behind, with the Indian dressing room now a cohesive unit that stands united through challenges and celebrates collective success.’’

Current Team India Activities

The Indian cricket team is currently on a tour of Zimbabwe, engaged in a five-match T20 series. The series is currently tied, with both teams having won one match each. India faced a defeat in the first match but bounced back to win the second match by 100 runs, thanks to a stellar century by young opener Abhishek Sharma, who scored 100 runs off 47 balls. The Indian team features several young players, with Shubman Gill as the captain and VVS Laxman acting as the team coach for this tour. Gautam Gambhir is set to join the team for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour at the end of the month.
