The world faced a major disruption due to a global Microsoft cloud outage affecting flights, banking, and railway services. While passengers experienced long waits, CrowdStrike clarified that the outage was not due to a cyber attack.

On Friday, the world faced a significant disruption as a global Microsoft cloud outage brought many essential services to a halt. The outage affected flights, banking operations, and railway services in numerous countries, leaving passengers stranded and businesses struggling to maintain operations.

Impact on Airports and Flights

Passengers experienced prolonged waits at airports worldwide due to the outage. At Hyderabad airport, more than 35 flights were cancelled, while Kolkata airport saw the cancellation of 11 incoming flights and delays in 29 others. In a slight relief, reports indicated that the situation at Delhi airport was improving, with screens starting to function again.

CrowdStrike Clarifies Cause of Outage

Amidst speculations, cybersecurity company CrowdStrike clarified that the Microsoft cloud outage was not due to a cyber attack. George Kurtz, CEO of CrowdStrike, stated on social media platform X that the disruption was not a security incident or cyber attack. According to CrowdStrike, the issue was identified and resolved without any security breach.

Microsoft’s Response and Resolution Efforts

Microsoft addressed the cloud outage, explaining that the issue arose due to an update on a third-party software platform affecting Windows-powered devices. A Microsoft spokesperson expressed optimism for a swift resolution, acknowledging the widespread impact on airlines, banks, and businesses globally. The update caused disruptions in online check-in and boarding processes for airlines such as Indigo, SpiceJet, and Akasa.

Minimal Impact on Indian Banks

In India, the banking sector remained largely unaffected by the Microsoft crisis. State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman Dinesh Kumar Khara assured that the bank’s operations were running smoothly. While many financial institutions worldwide faced issues, Indian banks and their payment systems continued to function without significant disruptions.

Details of the Outage

The Microsoft cloud outage led to numerous complaints of blue screens or shutdowns on millions of Windows-operated systems. This sudden halt in operations caused significant delays and cancellations of flights, disruptions in banking services, and affected railway services. The scale of the outage demonstrated the global reliance on Microsoft’s cloud services and highlighted the vulnerabilities in interconnected digital infrastructures.

Looking Ahead

As the world recovers from this significant disruption, it serves as a reminder of the importance of robust and resilient digital infrastructures. Governments and businesses are urged to strengthen their cybersecurity measures and contingency plans to mitigate the impact of such outages in the future.
