Former Vice President of Maldives Ahmed Adeeb highlights the strengthening relationship between India and the Maldives, citing recent diplomatic engagements and mutual cooperation.
Former Vice President and Former Tourism Minister of the Maldives, Ahmed Adeeb, has shed light on the strengthening diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives. Speaking on the current state of bilateral ties, Adeeb emphasized the historical closeness of the two countries, noting that the Maldives has consistently maintained an “India first” policy. “Maldives and India have been the closest neighbours, and Maldives has always been India’s first policy. India has been like a big brother to us,” Adeeb remarked.
The remarks by Adeeb come at a time when the Maldives’ new President, Mohamed Muizzu, is actively seeking to build stronger ties with India. President Muizzu’s attendance at the oath ceremony of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a significant diplomatic gesture, underscoring the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening relations with its largest neighbour. Adeeb highlighted this visit as a positive step towards enhancing bilateral cooperation, stating, “President Muizzu has started a very good relationship with India. President Muizzu has attended the oath ceremony of PM Modi, and External Affairs Minister Dr Jaishankar has visited the Maldives recently. So, the relationship has been fairly improving.”
Historical Bonds and Shared Interests
The relationship between India and the Maldives has been historically characterized by mutual respect, shared cultural ties, and strategic cooperation. India has been a significant partner for the Maldives in various sectors, including tourism, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development. The recent diplomatic overtures by President Muizzu are viewed as a continuation of this deep-rooted partnership.
According to Adeeb, the Maldives has always considered India a “big brother” in the region, providing support and assistance in times of need. This sentiment is reflected in the Maldives’ consistent approach of maintaining close and friendly relations with India, a policy that has proven beneficial for both nations. Adeeb’s comments underscore the importance of this relationship, particularly in a time of evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indian Ocean region.
Recent Diplomatic Engagements
The recent visit of Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to the Maldives further symbolizes the commitment of both countries to deepening their diplomatic and economic ties. During his visit, Dr. Jaishankar discussed various bilateral issues, including development cooperation, trade, and security, reaffirming India’s position as a key partner for the Maldives.
Furthermore, President Muizzu’s presence at Prime Minister Modi’s swearing-in ceremony was a significant diplomatic gesture, marking the first high-level engagement between the two nations under Muizzu’s leadership. This move has been widely welcomed as a step towards consolidating mutual trust and understanding between the two countries.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
Adeeb’s remarks suggest optimism for the future of India-Maldives relations. He believes that with the right diplomatic efforts, the partnership between the two nations will continue to flourish. “The relationship has been fairly improving,” he noted, pointing to the renewed efforts by President Muizzu to engage positively with Indian leadership.
As the Maldives navigates its foreign policy under new leadership, the emphasis on maintaining a strong relationship with India is expected to remain a cornerstone. With both nations looking to enhance cooperation in areas such as trade, security, and tourism, the future looks promising for bilateral ties.
The comments by Ahmed Adeeb highlight the deepening relationship between India and the Maldives, driven by shared values, mutual respect, and a commitment to regional stability.
