The opera house was illuminated in blue and white in support of Israel following attacks by the terrorist organization Hamas. Hundreds of Palestine supporters marched in Sydney in protest. At least 700 Israeli people have died so far in this war. These dead also include 260 people who had gone to attend a music festival. Of these, about 130 people were taken hostage.

Israel responded by launching a barrage in the Gaza Strip after Hamas rocket attacks killed 436 Palestinians, including more than 80 children. Additionally, Israel has also cut off electricity to densely populated areas in Gaza, making it difficult for health workers to treat more than 2200 injured people in Gaza.

Hundreds of people gathered outside Sydney Town Hall at around 6pm on Monday evening before marching towards the Opera House. People dressed in black, white, red and green carried Palestinian flags and carried banners with messages such as 'Apartheid, wrong in South Africa, wrong in Palestine' and 'Free Palestine'.
