People all over the world are facing floods, unseasonal rains and extreme heat due to climate change. The debate about climate change has been going on all over the world for a long time, but no solution seems to be coming out and people are losing their lives due to such changing weather. And according to a report by the Center for Science and Environment (CSE), extreme weather events killed 233 people and damaged 0.95 million hectares of crops between January and April this year.
The inclement weather has affected 32 states and union territories. Maximum 30 people died due to extreme weather in Rajasthan and Maharashtra, followed by Himachal Pradesh (28) and Bihar and Madhya Pradesh (27). Delhi reported 25 deaths during the same period last year, while 12 deaths have been reported this year.
According to the report, between January and April 2022, extreme weather events had claimed 86 lives and damaged 0.03 million hectares of crops. Lightning and storms occurred on 58 days this time, compared to 35 days during the same period in 2022. Most of these incidents happened in March and April. The country recorded just 15 heatwave days in the first four months of 2023 compared to 40 days last year.
Schools to remain closed in Goa on June 10 due to extreme heat
The Goa government on Friday announced that all government schools up to higher secondary will remain closed on June 10 due to extreme heat. Education director Shailesh Jhingde issued a circular during the day announcing the closure of schools on Saturday. The circular issued said that due to extreme heat and delay in monsoon in the state, it has been decided by the competent authority to close all the institutions on June 10.
Shailesh Jhingde said in the circular that the heads of all government, government-aided, unaided, primary, middle, secondary and higher secondary schools are requested to compensate for the academic loss in future. Monsoon is yet to arrive in Goa, before which extreme heat conditions are being observed.
