Bengal Panchayat Elections: 10% seats at Gram Panchayat level remained unopposed
According to sources in the West Bengal State Election Commission, the number of uncontested seats at each level is expected to increase slightly, as the figures for South 24 Parganas district are not yet included in it.
About 10 percent of the lowest-level seats in the three-tier panchayat system for rural body elections in West Bengal have remained uncontested. Elections are scheduled in the state on July 8. According to West Bengal State Election Commission data, out of 63,229 seats at the gram panchayat (GP) level, 6,238 seats remain uncontested, which is about 10 percent of the total figure.
In the case of the Panchayat Samiti (PS) level, which is the second tier of the three-tier panchayat system in the state, it has 9,730 seats, out of which 759 seats remain uncontested, which is about eight percent of the total seats. As per the latest State Election Commission data, of the 928 seats at the Zilla Parishad (ZP) level, eight (1 percent) seats remain uncontested.
The figure is expected to increase slightly
, however, according to sources in the commission, the figure of uncontested seats at each level is expected to increase slightly, as the figures for South 24 Parganas district are not yet included in it.
In the case of GP level, the maximum number of uncontested seats have been recorded in Birbhum at 893, followed by North 24 Parganas at 867 and Burdwan East at 858.
Birbhum tops the list again with 128
uncontested seats In the case of PS level, Birbhum again tops the list with 128 uncontested seats, followed by Bankura at 106 and North 24 Parganas at 104. In the case of eight uncontested seats at the Zilla Parishad level, three each are from North Dinajpur and North 24 Parganas. One each from Birbhum and Cooch Behar.
Although the State Election Commission has not told how many seats are going in favor of which political party, but political observers are sure that the majority in this case is in favor of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
