Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh Accuses Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia of Cheating, Blames Congress for Politicizing Sports
Former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh accuses wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia of cheating, and blames Congress for politicizing sports.
In a recent statement that has sparked controversy in the sports and political circles, former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP leader Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has accused prominent wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia of cheating to participate in the Asian Games. Singh’s remarks came following Phogat and Punia’s decision to join the Congress party, a move that has further fueled political tensions.
Allegations of Cheating in Wrestling Trials
Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh did not hold back his criticism, alleging that the wrestlers were involved in irregularities during the selection trials for the Asian Games. He stated, “Haryana is the crown of India in the field of sports. And they stopped the wrestling activities for almost 2.5 years. Is it not true that Bajrang went to the Asian Games without trials? I want to ask those who are experts in wrestling. I want to ask Vinesh Phogat whether a player can give trials in 2 weight categories in a day? Can the trials be stopped for 5 hours after the weigh-in?... You did not win the wrestling, you went there by cheating. God has punished you for the same.”
Singh’s comments have raised eyebrows, particularly his questioning of the process followed for the trials. His reference to the prolonged stoppage of wrestling activities in Haryana, a state renowned for its sports culture, adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing debate about the fairness of selection procedures in Indian sports.
Defense Against Accusations of Disrespect
The former WFI president also defended himself against allegations of disrespecting female athletes, which have been circulating in light of his recent statements. He said, “I am not guilty of disrespecting daughters. If anyone is guilty of disrespecting daughters, it is Bajrang and Vinesh. And the one who wrote the script, Bhupinder Hooda is responsible for that. If they (BJP) will ask me (to campaign in the Haryana polls), I can go. One day Congress will have to regret it...”
Singh’s statement attempts to shift the blame to the wrestlers and Congress leader Bhupinder Hooda, accusing them of fabricating narratives to malign his reputation. His remarks come amidst rising political tension, with the BJP and Congress locking horns over multiple issues in Haryana, including sports and athlete management.
Political Backdrop and Fallout
Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, both celebrated wrestlers with multiple international accolades, recently joined Congress, a move seen as significant in the build-up to the upcoming Haryana state elections. Their decision has triggered sharp reactions from the BJP, with Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s comments reflecting the underlying political undertones.
Singh’s statement about possibly campaigning for the BJP in Haryana, if requested, highlights his readiness to continue his involvement in state politics, despite the controversy. He further stated that “One day Congress will have to regret it,” hinting at a prolonged political battle ahead.
Wrestlers in the Eye of the Storm
The wrestlers’ entry into politics has polarized opinions, with some supporting their move as a step toward representing sports interests in governance, while others view it as politicization of sports. The allegations made by Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh add another layer of complexity, questioning not only the political motivations but also the integrity of the athletes’ selection to represent India.
As the controversy unfolds, the public and the sports community are closely watching the developments. With elections on the horizon, the clash between sports and politics is likely to intensify, raising questions about fairness, transparency, and the true spirit of competition in Indian sports.
