Chief Justice of India Chandrachud calls security to remove Petitioner’s lawyer Mathews Nedumpara during NEET hearing after a heated verbal exchange.

In a dramatic turn of events during the NEET hearing, Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud called security to remove Petitioner’s lawyer Mathews Nedumpara from the court. The incident occurred after a heated verbal exchange between the two, drawing significant attention to the courtroom proceedings.

Heated Verbal Exchange

The confrontation began when Mathews Nedumpara asserted his seniority and attempted to answer a question directed at another lawyer. Nedumpara declared, “I can answer your question. I am the senior most from all the lawyers here. I am the amicus.”

To this, CJI Chandrachud responded firmly, “No. I have not appointed any amicus.” Despite this clarification, Nedumpara continued to insist, “I will answer your question.”

Unwilling to entertain Nedumpara’s interruptions, CJI Chandrachud stated, “I don’t want you to answer the question. Sit down otherwise I will have you removed from the court.”

Escalation of Tensions

The situation escalated as Nedumpara retorted, “If you don’t respect me, I myself will leave.” The Chief Justice, maintaining his stance, reiterated, “When Mr. Hooda is arguing, I don’t want anyone to intervene.”

Nedumpara, however, persisted, saying, “I have only one thing to say.” This prompted CJI Chandrachud to instruct his staff, “Please call the security and have Mr. Nedumpara removed from the court.”

As security was called, Nedumpara decided to leave voluntarily but not without a final remark, “I am leaving. Don’t disrespect me. I have been here since 1979.”

Implications for the Hearing

The altercation disrupted the ongoing NEET hearing, which is of considerable significance given its impact on the future of medical aspirants across India. The courtroom drama highlighted underlying tensions and the importance of decorum and respect in legal proceedings.

Legal Community’s Reaction

The incident has sparked discussions within the legal community. Some members have expressed concern over the aggressive exchange, emphasizing the need for maintaining professionalism in the courtroom. Others have pointed out the importance of senior lawyers setting an example for their juniors by adhering to courtroom protocol.

This incident serves as a reminder of the high stakes and intense emotions often involved in legal proceedings, especially those with far-reaching implications like the NEET exam. As the NEET hearing continues, the focus remains on resolving the issues at hand, ensuring a fair outcome for the 24 lakh students whose futures hang in the balance.

While the heated exchange between CJI Chandrachud and Mathews Nedumpara may have momentarily overshadowed the primary issues, the incident underscores the critical role of respect and order in judicial processes.
