BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan Criticizes Mamata Banerjee Decision to Transfer Senior Police and Health Officials
BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan criticizes West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s decision to transfer senior police and health officials in the aftermath of a trainee doctor’s rape and murder, calling it an eyewash.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s recent decision to transfer senior officials, including Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Abhishek Gupta, along with two senior health officials, has sparked sharp criticism from the opposition. BJP National Spokesperson CR Kesavan accused the West Bengal government of using these transfers as a diversionary tactic to evade responsibility in the highly publicized case of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
In a public statement, Kesavan said, “The official minutes of the meeting yesterday have no mention of any suspension from government duty. It merely mentions transfers of senior police and health officials. A mere transfer is nothing but a ploy. It is an eyewash by Mamata Banerjee and the West Bengal Government to dodge responsibility in the heinous rape and murder of the trainee doctor.”
A Move That Raises Questions
According to the BJP spokesperson, the transfer of the officials does little to address the gravity of the incident, in which a trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered, sending shockwaves across the state. Kesavan criticized Banerjee for attempting to downplay the issue, suggesting that the Chief Minister was more focused on managing the optics of the situation than taking concrete action to deliver justice.
“Whatever diversionary tactics they use, the buck clearly stops at the desk of Mamata Banerjee,” Kesavan asserted, reiterating his party’s stance that the state government is attempting to deflect blame. He argued that a transfer of officers, without suspensions or firings, does not amount to taking real responsibility for the incident.
Public Outrage and Political Fallout
The case of the trainee doctor’s rape and murder has ignited widespread outrage, with citizens demanding stricter law enforcement and immediate action from the West Bengal government. In response, CM Mamata Banerjee took the step of transferring Vineet Goyal and Abhishek Gupta, both key figures in the Kolkata Police force, along with two senior health officials whose roles remain under scrutiny.
However, opposition parties, particularly the BJP, have been vocal in their dissatisfaction with this move. “The public is not asking for transfers; they are demanding justice. Mamata Banerjee’s government must take responsibility for the law and order failure that led to this tragedy,” Kesavan said.
Political Landscape in West Bengal
This incident has further escalated tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP in West Bengal. The BJP has been increasingly critical of the Banerjee administration’s handling of law and order issues, with Kesavan and other party leaders accusing the government of corruption, mismanagement, and failure to protect citizens.
The rape and murder case, in particular, has become a rallying point for the BJP’s calls for stronger leadership in the state. Kesavan concluded his statement by emphasizing that the party will continue to push for greater accountability and will not allow the West Bengal government to “sweep this case under the rug.”
What Lies Ahead?
As the political battle continues, the public awaits a decisive outcome in the case of the trainee doctor. With public sentiment boiling over and pressure mounting from the opposition, it remains to be seen how the Banerjee government will navigate this crisis and whether further action will be taken to address the criticisms raised by the BJP and other parties.
