A case of chopping off the thumb of a Dalit person has come to light from Patan district of
Gujarat. It is being told that a
cricket match was going on in a school in Patan district. During this a child picked up the ball. The people playing the match created a ruckus about it. The matter calmed down after a rescue between some people, but later some armed men raided the child's house and chopped off the Dalit man's thumb.
The incident took place in Kakoshi village of the district on Sunday, an official said. According to the FIR, the accused got angry and threatened the boy who picked up the ball while watching a
cricket match in the playground of a school in the village, he said.
He also allegedly uttered casteist slurs with an intention to insult and intimidate members of the Dalit community, the official said. He told that when the boy's uncle Dheeraj Parmar objected to this, the matter was pacified. But, later in the evening, a group of seven persons armed with sharp weapons attacked the complainant Dheeraj and his brother Kirti.
One of the accused chopped off Kirti's thumb and seriously injured her, he said. The FIR has been registered under sections 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the
Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act), the official said. . He told that efforts are being made to nab the accused.
