Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis Announces Relief for Soybean, Onion, and Basmati Farmers

Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis announces increased import duties on raw and refined oil, reduced export duty on onions and basmati rice, benefiting farmers.
Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has announced significant government measures aimed at benefiting the state’s farmers. In a press statement, Fadnavis revealed several policy changes designed to directly improve the profitability of key agricultural sectors, including soybean, onion, and basmati rice farming. These measures come in response to the ongoing challenges faced by farmers in terms of fluctuating prices and export restrictions.
Import Duty Hike to Benefit Soybean Farmers
One of the key announcements made by Deputy CM Fadnavis was the government’s decision to raise the import duty on raw oil to 20% and on refined oil to 32.5%. This policy is expected to have a direct and positive impact on the income of soybean farmers in Maharashtra. By making imported oil more expensive, local farmers will be able to secure better prices for their soybean produce, which is used to manufacture vegetable oil.
Fadnavis stated, “The increase in import duties will benefit our soybean farmers by ensuring that they receive higher prices for their crops. This decision is in line with the government’s commitment to protecting the interests of our agricultural sector and boosting the local economy.”
Reduction of Export Duty on Onions and Elimination of Minimum Export Price
In another significant move, the Deputy CM announced a reduction in export duties for onions. The export duty has been cut from 40% to 20%, making it easier for Indian onion farmers to sell their produce in international markets. Additionally, the government has done away with the minimum export price on onions, further simplifying the process for onion exporters.
“This policy shift will directly benefit our onion farmers,” Fadnavis said. “By reducing the export duty and eliminating the minimum export price, we are opening up international markets for our farmers. This will help increase demand for Indian onions and provide better returns for the farming community.”
Zero Export Duty on Basmati Rice
In a move that will be welcomed by rice producers, Fadnavis also announced that the export duty on basmati rice has been reduced to zero. Basmati rice, a highly valued export product for India, has faced challenges due to recent duty hikes. The government’s decision to remove export duties will now allow farmers and exporters to maximize their earnings.
Fadnavis explained, “The reduction of export duties on basmati rice to zero is a significant relief for our rice farmers. Basmati is a premium product in global markets, and by removing the export duty, we are ensuring that our farmers can compete effectively on the international stage.”
Supporting the Agricultural Sector
The policy changes announced by Deputy CM Fadnavis underscore the Maharashtra government’s ongoing efforts to support the agricultural sector. These decisions are aimed at improving the livelihoods of farmers by creating favorable conditions for both domestic sales and exports. Fadnavis emphasized that the government remains committed to addressing the concerns of farmers and providing them with opportunities to thrive in a competitive global market.
In conclusion, the Deputy CM reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring that Maharashtra’s farmers receive the support they need to succeed. “Our farmers are the backbone of our economy, and we will continue to implement policies that empower them,” Fadnavis said. “These changes mark an important step in our efforts to create a prosperous future for our agricultural community.”
