During 24 hours, 34 people have died due to landslides, cloud bursts, house collapses, falling trees and lightning due to torrential rains.
Heavy rains have caused havoc in North and West India. The hill states including Himachal Pradesh have suffered the most. In the last 24 hours, 34 people have died due to landslides, cloudbursts, house collapses, tree and lightning strikes due to torrential rains. Maximum 11 deaths occurred in Himachal. Apart from this, 8 died in UP, 6 in Uttarakhand, 3 in Delhi, two each in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Punjab. A 40-year-old bridge has been washed away in the spate of Beas river in Himachal's Mandi. Delhi has received 153 mm of rain in a single day in July after 41 years. Northern Railway has canceled 17 trains due to rain. Routes of 12 trains had to be changed.
Landslides have turned roads into debris in the hilly states, while roads in the plain states, including the capital Delhi, have been submerged in water. Due to this the traffic has been badly affected. Yamuna water in Delhi has reached near the danger mark. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the Chief Ministers of Punjab, Himachal and the Lieutenant Governors of Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir and assured all possible help from the Center to deal with the situation.
Ever since the arrival of monsoon in Himachal on June 24, there has been huge devastation. Due to a cloudburst in Mandi and Kullu late on Saturday night, the water suddenly increased in the Beas river, in which three bridges, one ATM and four shops were washed away. The Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts for heavy rains in the next 48 hours. The movement of other trains including Vande Bharat coming from Ambala to Una-Amb-Daulatpur Chowk came to a standstill due to water-logging on the tracks in many areas of Punjab. Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra has been suspended for two days. Six inches of water has rained in Hanumangarh of Rajasthan. On the other hand, there are flood-like situations in Jhunjhunu and Sikar.
Sudden flood and cars washed away
Several vehicles were washed away in Kullu-Manali due to sudden flood in the Beas river following a cloudburst. Five National Highways including Manali-Leh, Chandigarh-Manali, 736 roads have been closed due to landslides. The movement of trains has been stopped due to debris falling on the heritage Kalka-Shimla track.
Yamuna near red mark, flood alert in Delhi
Yamuna river water in Delhi has reached near the danger mark. At 9 pm, the water at the old railway bridge was at a height of 203.62 metres, which was 1.71 meters below the red mark. Due to continuous release of water from Hathinikund barrage in Yamunanagar, the Delhi government has issued a flood alert. So far more than one lakh cusecs of water has been released. Delhi received 153 mm of rain in 24 hours till 8 am on Sunday. This is the highest since 169.9 mm of rainfall on July 25, 1982, 41 years ago.
In Delhi, BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Road, BJP MP Pravesh Verma at Janpath Road, former Union Minister Murli Manohar Joshi at Raisina Road, Delhi Public Works Department Minister Atishi's house at Mathura Road were flooded.
Heavy rains in Uttarakhand, Punjab and Haryana
Punjab: Heavy rains lashed various districts including Patiala, Fazilka, Hoshiarpur, Fatehgarh Sahib. A flood alert has been issued in Patiala and houses in low-lying areas have been evacuated. Chandigarh has received 322 mm of rain in 24 hours. Normal life has been affected due to heavy rains.
Haryana: Heavy rains lashed most districts including Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kurukshetra, Karnal and Kaithal. Ambala has recorded 270 mm of rain since Saturday.
Uttarakhand: Orange alert has been issued for heavy rains in the next two days. More than 175 roads have been closed due to debris from landslides. The Gangotri-Yamunotri highway will remain closed from eight in the night to five in the morning.
Schools closed in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida and Ludhiana
Schools had to be closed due to heavy rains. Schools will remain closed on Monday in Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Hapur and Faridabad. In Ludhiana too, it has been announced to close schools due to rain.
Schools in Ghaziabad will remain closed from July 10-16 due to rain and Kanwar Yatra.
Shri Amarnath Yatra restored
Amarnath Yatra, which was postponed due to rain and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir for two days, was restored on the third day on Sunday from both Pahalgam and Baltal routes. Devotees were allowed to proceed for the darshan of Baba Barfani after the sky was clear around the cave temple on Sunday.
Due to heavy rains, the driver and the conductor of a passenger bus were killed in a landslide in Doda. Tawi in Udhampur and Jhelum river in South Kashmir-Srinagar are above the danger mark. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Kathua, Samba and advised not to go near the river-drain.
Mohali: Boat had to be called to evacuate people
Gulmohar Housing Society in Zirakpur, Mohali was flooded due to heavy rains. Cars drowned. Due to water filling up to the first floor, people had to take the help of a boat to evacuate.
50 people stranded on the banks of Satluj at Khanna in Ludhiana have been rescued. The Ropar-Nangal rail track has been uprooted. NDRF has also been deployed in Bathinda.
