Devotees Flock to Adyapith Kali Temple in Howrah’s Dakshineshwar for Diwali Celebrations
Thousands of devotees gathered at the Adyapith Kali Temple in Howrah’s Dakshineshwar to celebrate Diwali, seeking blessings and participating in vibrant festivities at the renowned temple.
A Historic Temple Celebrates Diwali with Grandeur
The temple authorities noted a significant increase in the number of devotees this year, with visitors making their way to Dakshineshwar from various parts of West Bengal and neighboring states. Devotees offered prayers, sought blessings from Goddess Kali, and participated in special rituals performed by the temple priests. “Diwali holds a special meaning for us here at the Adyapith Temple, as it is not only a festival of lights but also a night of spiritual awakening,” commented one of the temple priests.
As night fell, the temple premises were illuminated with thousands of earthen lamps, creating a breathtaking sight against the backdrop of the river Hooghly. The temple’s primary deity, a majestic statue of Goddess Kali, was adorned with garlands, jewels, and vibrant flowers, capturing the reverent attention of worshippers. Many devotees observed a fast before performing their pujas, as per tradition, and offered symbolic items such as sweets, fruits, and incense to the Goddess.
Religious Ceremonies and Special Puja for Diwali
In the evening, the main “Kali Puja” was held, a high point of the Diwali celebrations. Devotees chanted hymns and mantras dedicated to Goddess Kali, invoking her blessings for protection, prosperity, and happiness. The aarti and “bhog” (offering of food) were performed with grandeur, and temple volunteers distributed prasad (sacred food) among the visitors. Families, including children and the elderly, were seen standing in long queues, undeterred by the wait, eager to witness the evening’s spiritual spectacle.
Devotees Share Their Experience
Many devotees also spoke about the meticulous arrangements made by the temple authorities. “The organization this year was commendable. From crowd management to providing access to elderly devotees, everything was well-planned,” said a devotee from North 24 Parganas, who visits the temple each Diwali.
Managing the Festive Crowd: Temple Authorities’ Efforts
With such a large turnout, the temple management ensured that all safety and health protocols were strictly adhered to, given the anticipated surge in visitors. Volunteers were deployed across the temple grounds to manage the flow of devotees, assist with rituals, and ensure that everyone had an opportunity to perform their prayers. Security measures were enhanced, with CCTV cameras installed to monitor the premises, and local police were on standby to maintain order.
Special arrangements were also made for elderly visitors and those with disabilities, allowing them priority access to the main shrine. A medical team was stationed at the temple entrance to assist in case of emergencies, providing a safe and secure environment for all attendees.
