Explosion in two firecracker factories in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, 18 people died; Rescue operation continue

Two explosions occurred one after the other in firecracker manufacturing factories near Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. At least 18 people are reported to have died during this period.

According to the information, the first explosion took place near Sivakasi in Virudhunagar district. There is news of death of five people here so far. After this, fire department officials were immediately sent to the spot.

The second blast took place at another unit in Kammapatti village in the same district. Police officials have confirmed that 13 people have lost their lives so far in the blasts. Fire department employees are present on the spot. The causes of the explosion are being investigated.



Earlier on October 9, a fire broke out in a firecracker unit in Ariyalur district. At least nine people died in this. Chief Minister MK Stalin had expressed his condolences and announced cash relief for the affected families. The incident took place at a private unit in Viragalur village in the district.

The Chief Minister had said that five injured people were admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Deployed his cabinet colleagues SS Shivshankar and CV Ganesan to expedite rescue and relief activities. He had announced an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh each to the families of each deceased, Rs 1 lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to those with moderate injuries.
