Gonda Train Derailment: Ex gratia compensation announced for victims. A high-level enquiry and CRS enquiry have been ordered by the Ministry of Railways.

In the wake of the tragic train derailment in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, the Ministry of Railways has announced an ex gratia compensation package for the victims. The derailment, which involved the 15904 Dibrugarh Express, resulted in significant casualties and injuries. The Ministry has declared that the families of the deceased will receive Rs. 10 lakhs, those with grievous injuries will be given Rs. 2.5 lakhs, and the minor injured will receive Rs. 50,000 each.

The Incident

The accident occurred when the Dibrugarh Express, traveling from Chandigarh to Dibrugarh, derailed near Gonda late Wednesday night. Reports indicate that 10 to 12 AC coaches overturned, causing chaos and panic among the passengers. The immediate aftermath saw four passengers losing their lives and over 20 others suffering injuries of varying severity.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitnesses described a scene of horror and confusion as the train came to a sudden and violent halt. “There was a loud bang, and the next thing we knew, we were thrown from our seats,” said Manish Tiwari, who was traveling in coach B2. “People were screaming and trying to find their loved ones in the dark.”

Another passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted, “I heard what sounded like an explosion just before the derailment. It was terrifying. We are lucky to be alive.”

Response and Rescue Operations

Rescue operations were launched immediately after the accident, with local authorities and railway officials rushing to the scene. Medical teams were deployed to provide first aid and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Additional security forces were also sent to manage the situation and ensure the safety of the passengers.

The bodies of the deceased and the injured were quickly moved from the site, and efforts were made to clear the tracks for restoration work. The Railway Ministry has emphasized that every possible measure is being taken to assist the victims and their families during this difficult time.

Investigations and Enquiries

The Ministry of Railways has ordered a high-level enquiry to determine the cause of the derailment. In addition to this, a Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) enquiry will also be conducted. These investigations aim to uncover the reasons behind the accident and to ensure accountability.

Initial reports suggest that the loco pilot, Tribhuvan, heard an explosion before the derailment, which has raised suspicions of sabotage. Both the CRS enquiry and the high-level investigation will delve into these claims to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading up to the derailment.

Government and Public Reactions

The announcement of the ex gratia compensation has been met with mixed reactions. While some see it as a necessary and compassionate step, others believe more stringent measures are needed to prevent such accidents in the future. Public safety and railway infrastructure have once again come under scrutiny, prompting calls for more robust safety protocols and regular maintenance checks.

The Gonda train derailment is a tragic reminder of the vulnerabilities within the railway system. As investigations proceed, the priority remains to support the victims and their families and to implement measures that will prevent such incidents from recurring. The railway authorities are committed to ensuring a thorough enquiry and taking the necessary actions to enhance the safety and reliability of train travel in India.
