IMD Issues Alert as Deep Depression Approaches Tamil Nadu and Puducherry
Deep Depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal to impact Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with heavy rains and strong winds. IMD predicts marginal intensification into a Cyclonic Storm.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal continues to move northwards. The system, currently located near latitude 9.1°N and longitude 82.1°E, about 110 km east-northeast of Trincomalee, is expected to bring heavy rainfall and gusty winds to the region. Authorities are closely monitoring its trajectory and preparing for potential impacts.
The depression, which has been moving at a speed of 2 kmph over the past six hours, is forecast to cross the northern Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram on the morning of 30th November 2024. IMD predicts the system will maintain its status as a deep depression, with sustained wind speeds of 50-60 kmph and gusts reaching up to 70 kmph.
Possibility of Cyclonic Intensification
According to IMD officials, there is a possibility of the system intensifying into a cyclonic storm, with wind speeds of 65-75 kmph, gusting to 85 kmph, over the southwest Bay of Bengal during the evening of 28th November to the morning of 29th November. If this occurs, the weather event could bring more significant impacts to coastal regions.
The IMD has urged residents of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to remain cautious and prepared for heavy rains, strong winds, and potential disruptions to daily life. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea, as conditions are expected to become increasingly dangerous in the coming days.
Preparations Underway
The Tamil Nadu and Puducherry governments have initiated precautionary measures to mitigate potential damage. Disaster response teams have been put on standby, and evacuation plans for low-lying areas are being readied. Authorities are coordinating with local agencies to ensure that emergency supplies, such as food, water, and medical aid, are readily available.
In Chennai, the Greater Chennai Corporation has intensified efforts to clear stormwater drains and ensure that flood mitigation systems are operational. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain indoors and follow official advisories for safety.
Weather Impacts
The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry starting from 28th November, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in certain districts. Coastal areas, including Karaikal, Nagapattinam, and Mahabalipuram, are likely to experience the brunt of the weather system. The combination of heavy rains and gusty winds could lead to localized flooding, uprooting of trees, and disruption of transportation and power supply.
Further inland, districts such as Chennai, Cuddalore, and Villupuram are also expected to experience significant rainfall and wind speeds. Residents are advised to stay informed about weather updates and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property.
Historical Context
This weather system is reminiscent of previous cyclonic storms that have impacted Tamil Nadu during the northeast monsoon season. Coastal regions of the state often face cyclonic threats during this time of the year, making preparedness and resilience critical to minimizing damage and ensuring public safety.
The IMD’s advancements in weather forecasting and timely dissemination of information have played a vital role in reducing casualties and economic losses in recent years. With continued efforts from both authorities and the public, the region aims to navigate this impending weather event with minimal disruption.
IMD’s Advisory
The IMD has issued specific advisories for different stakeholders:
- Fishermen: Avoid venturing into the southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, and adjoining areas until the system weakens.
- Travelers: Reconsider travel plans to coastal regions of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the affected period.
- General Public: Stay indoors during heavy rainfall and strong winds, and avoid crossing waterlogged areas.
Community Support
Community organizations and NGOs have stepped in to support vulnerable populations by providing temporary shelters and essential supplies. Social media platforms are being used to disseminate real-time updates and advisories, ensuring that information reaches remote areas effectively.
Local residents are also coming together to assist their neighbors and prepare for potential challenges. From securing rooftops to stocking up on essentials, the spirit of resilience and cooperation is evident across the region.
