At the 9th India-Brazil Joint Commission Meeting held in Delhi, Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira highlighted the deepening ties between the two nations, emphasizing their shared commitment to sustainable development, prosperity, and the reform of international institutions. Vieira described Brazil and India as ‘vibrant multi-ethnic democracies’ from the developing world that represent a positive force in global affairs.
Vieira noted that both countries are united in their advocacy for reforming the United Nations, particularly the UN Security Council, to make it more representative, effective, and legitimate. This shared vision has been a cornerstone of Brazil and India’s strategic partnership, which has seen significant growth in recent years. ‘Our governments work towards achieving sustainable development and prosperity for our societies. We both advocate for a reform of the United Nations, in particular for a more representative, effective and legitimate UN Security Council,’ Vieira stated.
The meeting also served as a platform to discuss the upcoming G20 Summit, which will be hosted by Brazil in Rio de Janeiro this November. Vieira expressed Brazil’s eagerness to welcome India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the summit, where leaders from around the world will convene to address pressing global issues. ‘President Lula will be glad to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro next November,’ Vieira said, underscoring the importance of India’s participation in the event.
Highlighting the expanding scope of India-Brazil relations, Vieira remarked on the significant progress made in various sectors, including digital governance, bioenergy, agriculture, and defense. He pointed out that the bilateral agenda has grown considerably, incorporating new and promising areas of cooperation. ‘Brazil and India’s strategic partnership has promoted a fast-growing cooperation in many sectors. Over the last few years, there has been a significant expansion of our bilateral agenda, incorporating promising areas such as digital governance, bioenergy, agriculture and defense, to name only a few,’ he elaborated.
Despite the challenges posed by the current international scenario, trade between Brazil and India has been steadily growing. Last year, bilateral trade reached USD 12 billion, making India one of Brazil’s main trading partners. Vieira acknowledged this achievement while also noting that the trade relationship has yet to reach its full potential. ‘Our trade has been steadily growing, having reached USD 12 billion last year, a result that makes India one of Brazil’s main trading partners, although far from reaching its full potential,’ Vieira commented.
The 9th India-Brazil Joint Commission Meeting not only reaffirmed the strong ties between the two countries but also set the stage for future collaboration in areas that are critical to both nations’ growth and development. The discussions underscored the mutual respect and shared goals that have driven the partnership forward, with both countries committed to working together on the global stage to address common challenges.
As the international community watches closely, the strategic partnership between Brazil and India continues to evolve, with the potential to shape the future of international relations, particularly through their joint efforts in advocating for a reformed and more inclusive United Nations. The upcoming G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro will be another significant milestone in this enduring and dynamic relationship.
